Intellectual Property Law

At UT Legal, we help UK-based individuals and businesses protect and enforce their intellectual property (IP) rights in Turkey. Whether you’re registering a trademark, defending a copyright, or drafting a licensing agreement, we ensure your creative and commercial assets are legally secure — with support from our bilingual legal team in London and Istanbul.

What Does Turkish Intellectual Property Law Cover?

Intellectual Property in Turkey is regulated by the Industrial Property Code No. 6769, along with international treaties such as the Paris Convention, Madrid Protocol, and TRIPS Agreement. These laws cover the registration, protection, enforcement and licensing of:

  • Trademarks
  • Patents and utility models
  • Industrial designs
  • Geographical indications
  • Trade secrets and confidential information
  • Copyrights (separately governed by Law No. 5846)

If you operate in areas like fashion, software, publishing, technology, or media, Turkish IP law will be essential for safeguarding your brand, inventions and content when doing business or selling in Turkey.

How Can UK Companies Register a Trademark in Turkey?

Trademark registration is handled by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT). Foreign applicants — including UK businesses — must apply through a licensed Turkish trademark attorney.

The key steps are:

  1. Trademark search: Checking for similar or identical registered marks
  2. Filing the application: Including Nice Classification categories
  3. Examination: Review of legal requirements by TÜRKPATENT
  4. Publication: A 2-month period for third-party opposition
  5. Registration: If no objections, your mark is approved for 10 years (renewable)

Even if you hold a UK or EU trademark, it won’t protect you in Turkey unless you register locally. We handle the full process for you and respond to objections, if any arise.
