How To Issue A Power Of Attorney From The UK For Turkey

Upated Date:
Issuing a power of attorney from the UK for Turkey allows you to authorise someone in Turkey to act on your behalf without travelling there yourself. In Turkish, this document is called a vekaletname. It is commonly used for property transactions, title deed procedures, inheritance matters, lawsuits, bank transactions and official applications.
However, a UK power of attorney is not automatically accepted in Turkey. Turkish authorities usually expect the document to be prepared with the correct wording and, where needed, notarised, apostilled and translated into Turkish.
What Is A Power Of Attorney For Turkey?
A power of attorney for Turkey is an official document that gives another person the authority to complete certain actions for you in Turkey. This person may be a lawyer, family member, property adviser or another trusted representative.
The document can be broad or limited. For example, you may authorise someone only to complete a title deed transfer for one property, or you may appoint a lawyer to represent you in a legal case.
In most cases, a limited and transaction-specific power of attorney is safer. A broad general power of attorney may seem practical, but it can create risk if it allows the representative to sell property, collect money, manage bank accounts or sign binding documents.
When Do You Need A Power Of Attorney For Turkey?
You may need a power of attorney if you are in the UK and cannot be physically present in Turkey for a transaction that requires your signature or approval.
Common situations include:
Buying, selling or transferring property in Turkey
Completing title deed office procedures
Appointing a lawyer for a court case or legal matter
Managing inheritance or probate procedures
Opening, closing or managing a Turkish bank account
Handling tax office, municipality or official applications
The wording should match the transaction. A power of attorney for a property sale should not be drafted in the same way as one for a lawsuit or bank procedure.
What Are The Ways To Issue A Power Of Attorney From The UK?
There are two common routes for issuing a power of attorney from the UK for Turkey:
Route | Best For | Key Point |
Turkish Consulate Route | Property, inheritance, litigation and formal Turkish procedures | A certified copy of the Power of Attorney can be obtained from a notary public in Türkiye on the same day |
UK Notary + Apostille Route | Cases where a consular appointment is not available or a UK-issued document is needed | Must be notarised, apostilled and usually translated correctly |
A Power of Attorney can be executed either at a Turkish Consulate or before a UK notary public. Although both options are legally valid, we generally recommend using a UK notary public, as it is often quicker and more convenient.
Turkish Consulates can experience high demand, and obtaining an appointment may take several weeks depending on the location and time of year. This can unnecessarily delay your transaction in Türkiye. By contrast, appointments with a UK notary public are often available much sooner, allowing the Power of Attorney to be completed without waiting for a consular appointment.
For use in Türkiye, the Power of Attorney should be drafted in Turkish (or in a bilingual format) and prepared in a form that complies with Turkish legal requirements. This helps ensure that the document will be accepted by Turkish courts, Land Registry offices, banks, notaries and other public authorities without delay.
Where a Power of Attorney is executed before a UK notary public, it will usually need to be apostilled before it can be used in Türkiye. It is important to understand that an apostille only certifies the authenticity of the notary's signature and seal it does not confirm that the contents of the Power of Attorney are suitable or sufficient for the intended transaction under Turkish law. For this reason, it is essential that the document is drafted correctly from the outset to meet the requirements of the relevant Turkish authority.
How To Issue It Through The Turkish Consulate
With this route, you attend a Turkish Consulate or Embassy in the UK for a notarial appointment. The power of attorney is prepared in Turkish and signed before the authorised consular officer.
You will usually need:
A valid passport or Turkish ID
Full details of the person you are appointing
Draft power of attorney wording
Photos if the transaction requires them
Supporting details such as title deed, case or file information
Appointment confirmation and applicable fee
For property transactions, photos and title deed information can be especially important. If the document is missing a required photo or contains incorrect property details, it may be rejected by the title deed office in Turkey.
How To Issue It Through A UK Notary And Apostille
This route involves signing the document before a UK notary public. After notarisation, the document usually needs an apostille so it can be recognised for use in Turkey. Once it reaches Turkey, a sworn Turkish translation and local notarisation may also be required.
The usual process is:
Prepare wording suitable for the Turkish transaction.
Sign the document before a UK notary public.
Obtain an apostille for the notarised document.
Send the original document to Turkey.
Arrange sworn Turkish translation and notarisation if required.
The main risk with this route is that the document may be formally notarised but still unsuitable for the Turkish authority reviewing it. For this reason, the wording should be checked before signing, ideally by the lawyer, adviser or institution handling the matter in Turkey.
What Should The Power Of Attorney Include?
A Turkish power of attorney should be clear, specific and aligned with the transaction. Vague wording may cause delays or rejection.
It should usually include:
Full identity or passport details of the person granting authority
Full details of the appointed representative
A clear description of the powers granted
Property details if the matter involves real estate
Case, bank, company or file details if relevant
Any time limit or transaction limit
For example, wording such as “to deal with property matters” may not be enough. If the representative must sell a property, sign title deed documents, collect payment, deal with the tax office or complete municipality procedures, these powers may need to be stated clearly.
Common Mistakes To Avoid When Issuing A Power Of Attorney From The UK For Turkey
Many problems occur because the document is prepared too generally or signed before checking what Turkish authorities actually require.
Common mistakes include:
Using a generic UK power of attorney template
Forgetting to obtain an apostille after the UK notary process
Sending only a scanned copy when the original document is required
Failing to include the required photo for property transactions
Making mistakes in passport or identity details
Granting broad but unclear powers
Using an incorrect or incomplete Turkish translation
Before signing, it should be clear where the document will be used in Turkey and what wording that authority expects.
Can I Buy Property In Turkey Without Travelling There?
Yes. You can appoint a trusted person or lawyer through a properly prepared power of attorney to complete the purchase process in Turkey.
